World premiere: Campingbox for Mercedes G
The Kombibox and Busbox by QUQUQ have been available for some time, allowing you to transform a high-roof station wagon or van into a mini-motorhome in the matter of minutes. At the Düsseldorf Caravan Salon the G-Box now celebrates its world premiere, enabling you to now also turn the legendary off-road vehicle Mercedes G into compact motorhome in literally only a few seconds.
Designer Ulrich Vielmetter from Sprockhövel is the creative mind behind QUQUQ and the maker of the G-Box. It combines a kitchen, a practical, easy to set-up bed as well as ample storage space in only one single compact box. Simply load it into the back of the angular, classic offroader, lash it up and the all-wheel drive mini-motorhome is ready to go on a short trip, vacation or expedition in less than two minutes.
The kitchen and bed make up one module. The practical kitchen box is ‘handmade in Germany’, 81 cm wide, 42 cm high and 76 cm deep. The robust and resilient box is made of water resistant wood. All edges are protected with strong aluminium profiles. With its two side handles the G-Box can be easily lifted and loaded by two people. In order to install the box and bed no drilling, sawing or other modifications are required. The practical camping appliance can be used with or without a backseat bench and a TÜV registration is not necessary.
The well thought out and efficient box is simply loaded into the back of the Mercedes G and secured with four lashing straps. The 195 x 126 cm large bed can be removed to make the installation even easier. It is then pushed in lengthwise, turned by 90° and held in place with two star knob screws. Should you require a bed for the night it is easily set-up in an instant: the bed, with its 10 cm cold-foam mattress and removable cotton covers, is simply folded forwards and attached with the strap holders, so within seconds your bed is ready. Should you not require the bed surface during a short trip, it can quickly be removed from the kitchen box.
The bed can be us used completely independently from the kitchen. This means that one person can stay in bed whilst the other person makes the morning coffee, as the kitchen can easily be accessed from the rear of the vehicle at all times without any additional conversions.
The opened front panel serves as a working and storage space. The left side of the box contains a pull-out cooking module including a two-flame gas burner – optionally a Origo 3000 spirit burner also fits – plus windshield as well as a storage compartment for kitchen utensils and food items.
On the right side, two ten liter water canisters with outlet taps are contained. They are easily removable for filling. Water supply functions reliably even without power connection. Underneath the canisters two bowls are fitted, for washing-up or as a storage facility for fruit and vegetables. The middle of the box contains a storage compartment with two storage boxes (LxWxH 30x20x17 cm). Alternatively two additional water canisters holding 10 liters each can be fitted.
When not in use the G-Box “parks” in the basement or garage. It fits through all standard front doors and requires less than one square meter floor space. The box is installed or removed in just one to two minutes.
Since the beginning of the year, two couples are driving through the USA and Mexico with the G-Box on board, as test customers so to speak. At times, their journey can be quite demanding especially off-road, which means the boxes are tested under real conditions. QUQUQ is in close contact with the vehicle crews and is regularly kept informed on the experiences with the G-Box. Should any “teething problems” occur, these can be dealt with and if necessary, details can be further optimized.
For the first time the G-Box will be publicly presented as a world premiere at the Caravan Salon Düsseldorf 2016 from August 26th to September 4th, (Hall 05, Booth D20). Along with the G-Box, a KombiBox in a VW Caddy and also a BusBox for use in vans and transporters will be on show in Düsseldorf.
The price for the approximately 65 kg heavy G-Box (40 kg Box, 25 kg bed) is a lean 2.590 Euro.
