Alternative to air suspension: BILSTEIN B6 Camper and BILSTEIN B6 Camper Advanced Looking for the perfect driving experience: retrofitting air springs or upgrading dampers?

Motorhomes are in demand like never before. However, many newcomers are surprised when they set off on their first big vacation trip with their home on wheels. Fully loaded, the standard chassis quickly reaches its limits. Background: motorhomes based on vans generally also adopt their unmodified chassis. These are designed ex works for different load conditions - but not for permanent maximum payload. In campers, the heavy fixtures and enormous payload - for example, luggage, bicycles or additional equipment as well as a significantly higher center of gravity - are clearly noticeable: A lack of travel comfort, poor stability in bends and during fast driving maneuvers or annoying noises can be the result. To remedy this, most campers first think of the expensive and time-consuming installation of additional air suspension, which they associate with better comfort. Wrong idea: air springs lift the heavy camper - usually on the rear axle - which benefits suspension comfort, but the active suspension remains in the hands of the standard springs. At the same time, the standard damper is responsible for damping the vehicle, which can be easily replaced to increase comfort.

If you want to enjoy the perfect driving experience on your next trip, you should consider upgrading the vibration dampers with products specially developed for campers - such as the BILSTEIN B6 Camper and BILSTEIN B6 Camper Advanced high-performance shock absorbers. These can compensate for the design-related shortcomings of standard leaf springs by being ideally matched to a highly loaded chassis. The solution developed by technology leader BILSTEIN keeps the vehicle in the optimum comfort range.

Damper upgrade is easy on the wallet

The special setup of the B6 Camper shock absorbers increases safety in crosswinds, improves grip in bends and intensifies the driving experience. In addition, traction is improved, handling is more precise, ride comfort is increased and the adapted damping reduces driving noise thanks to the optimized rolling behaviour. This makes these dampers an attractive alternative to air suspension - especially as they are easy on the budget: Compared to installing air springs, converting to BILSTEIN B6 Camper products is much quicker and cheaper, as no additional spring needs to be fitted. Furthermore, there is no need for heavy additional parts such as compressors, nor do the mechanical high-performance vibration dampers require any special maintenance. Another advantage: Conversion to the BILSTEIN B6 Camper dampers is registration-free - one less item on the long to-do list before the next vacation.

The BILSTEIN B6 Camper and BILSTEIN B6 Camper Advanced are suitable for semi-integrated and fully integrated vehicles and vans based on the Fiat Ducato from 2006 onwards (Light & Maxi / Heavy) as well as for all identical vehicles from Citroën, Peugeot and Opel: the Citroën Jumper, Peugeot Boxer and Opel Movano. Camper shock absorbers have recently also been launched for the up-and-coming Sprinter models 906, 907 and 910. Further variants and vehicle applications will follow.

Conclusion: additional air springs vs. shock absorber upgrade

Campers looking for a significant increase in comfort should consider an upgrade with BILSTEIN B6 Camper and BILSTEIN B6 Camper Advanced - especially if they are on a budget or have an older vehicle. The pure damper solution is not only cheaper to purchase than an additional air suspension, which in any case only acts as an assistant to the overstretched leaf springs, but the installation costs also remain low.

Motorhome owners who do not want to do without the level compensation of the air suspension and a possible increase in the permissible total weight can have special motorhome shock absorbers such as BILSTEIN B6 Camper or BILSTEIN B6 Camper Advanced fitted when retrofitting air suspension. After all, the simultaneous replacement of air suspension and vibration dampers not only makes economic sense. It also promises maximum performance for the vehicle.
