Exterior Utility Connection Design Becomes a New Focus for Premium Motorhome and Campervan Manufacturers

As consumer expectations continue to rise, manufacturers of motorhomes, campervans and overland vehicles are paying increasing attention to an area that has traditionally received little design focus: exterior utility connections.

Power inlets, water fills, gas connections and charging points are no longer viewed as purely functional components. For OEMs, they have become an important part of a vehicle's overall design language, influencing both aesthetics and the user experience while also presenting opportunities to simplify production and improve long-term reliability.

Drawing on more than 40 years of engineering experience in the marine sector, where products are designed to withstand harsh outdoor environments, Scanstrut has introduced the new Roam and Ventura Series for the recreational vehicle market. The ranges combine power, water, gas and connectivity solutions within a consistent platform, sharing common installation dimensions and a unified exterior appearance to help streamline vehicle production.

Each product is engineered for demanding outdoor use, offering IP68/IP69K waterproof protection, marine-grade materials and compact designs that maximise installation flexibility. By standardising external utility connections across multiple applications, manufacturers can reduce installation complexity while delivering a cleaner, more integrated finish.

The design-led approach has already received international recognition. The Ventura Series has been awarded the 2026 Red Dot Award for Product Design, alongside an iF Design Award and a European Innovation Award, reflecting the growing emphasis on well-engineered exterior systems within modern recreational vehicle design.
