Cold foam

In combination with special additives, a foam with closed pores and an irregular structure is specifically produced. Due to the high reactivity, the chemical reaction proceeds quickly and a homogeneous hardness distribution is achieved in the foam block. This creates a particularly elastic polymer matrix, which ensures the high elasticity of the cold foam. To increase the comfort properties, quality manufacturers add an additional process step after the foaming process. In this process, the membranes of the cold foam are broken open. The resulting open pore structure leads to high air permeability and thus promotes rapid moisture transport. This property ensures a pleasant climate in upholstery and mattresses and prevents heat build-up. High elasticity is the outstanding characteristic of cold foam. It can be measured by the ball rebound elasticity, in which a steel ball is dropped from a defined height onto a foam impactor and the rebound height is measured as a percentage of the initial height. In the field of mattresses, this property is also referred to as "point elasticity". The rebound or point elasticity of cold foam is >50%.

Material selection for upholstery

Just a few years ago, covers made of cotton blend fabrics were the standard for furnishing recreational vehicles. But upholstery fabrics made of microfibres, which are very durable and particularly easy to clean, first became established in the upholstered furniture industry and are now also becoming increasingly popular in vehicle construction. When choosing a material, it is important to consider not only your own material preferences but also the durability of the fabric. In motorhomes and caravans, the materials are subjected to much more stress than, for example, at home on the couch. The main quality characteristic is the abrasion resistance number according to the Martindale test. The standard method of testing the abrasion resistance of a fabric consists of a special device that rubs the test fabric with strong pressure against wool or sandpaper. The value indicates how many abrasion cycles the respective fabric can withstand until it is visually damaged. The higher the abrasion number, the more durable the fabric. Equally important is the light fastness. This indicates how "resilient" the fabric is against fading. The higher the value, the more resistant the fabric is. However, there is no general protection against fading. Another interesting indication is the tear resistance. This is the resistance that the fabric offers to the further tearing of a previously cut textile surface. The higher the value, the more resistant the fabric is to tearing. And as a further value the pilling should be considered. This indicates how sensitive the fabric is to "linting".

Scrubbing cycles

The term abrasion resistance is used to determine a value for the durability of an upholstery fabric in so-called abrasion tests. According to the so-called Martindale method, a test fabric and a fabric are rubbed against each other. The method simulates the natural wear of a fabric cover by rubbing a sample of the fabric to be tested against a standard woollen fabric with a specified weight load. The test apparatus operates at 5,000 intervals. The wear number (Martindale) of these so-called abrasion cycles, which leads to the wear of two threads, is measured. The abrasion resistance is then specified by the manufacturers in abrasion cycles. The fabric is the more hard-wearing the higher the number of tours.
