In the south of the district of Düren the municipalities Heimbach, Hürtgenwald, Kreuzau and Nideggen form the holiday and recreation region Rur-Eifel. The hiking region Rureifel with its approximately 740 km of signposted circular hiking trails criss-cross the Rur-Eifel. From the small 2 km round for families and walkers up to 23 km hikes for ambitious hikers, there is everything. The suitable hiking map and individual advice are available at the national park gates and information points.
Seven circular trails provide an insight into the events of World War II in the Hürtgenwald and Schmidt. The Historic Literary Trail with its seven themed loops provides descriptions of the route with the relevant historical background and the respective portrayal in international literature. Open and bookable guided tours with the history guides can deepen the insights even more.
Climbing in Nideggen, canoeing between Heimbach and Obermaubach, stand-up paddling on the Rursee, the Rur-Eifel offers a lot of leisure time activities of the rapid or extraordinary kind. On the two reservoirs in Heimbach and Kreuzau-Obermaubach you can take it a bit easier in a pedal boat or a rowing boat. The Rursee can also be explored by sailing boat.
In addition to the Eschauel bathing beach in Nideggen-Schmidt, the open-air pools in Heimbach, Abenden and Vossenack offer great refreshment in the warm summer months. Those who also want to enjoy the water in the colder months will find a real wellness oasis in the monte mare in Kreuzau.
With the RurUfer cycle path, one of the most popular route cycle paths in the region winds through the Rur-Eifel region and connects it with Monschau, Düren and Jülich and on to Roermond.
The cycling offer in the Rur-Eifel is rounded off by the mountain bike tour network and the Hürtgenwald mountain bike park.
