Sithonia Peninsula

Of the three prayers which Halkidiki sends out into the blue Aegean, one extends deeper than the others, into the heart of the sea, that being the lush peninsula of Sithonia. A truly blessed place. A rugged coastline of golden beaches, a vision of indescribable beauty, painted in exquisite colors from the palette of nature herself, surrounding the mountain of Itamos, also known as the ‘quiet mountain’, or, in the local dialect, Dragoudeli.

The coastline of Sithonia extends over a total length of 200km, offering remarkable variations and contrasts of rocks and bays, peaks and coves, sand and pine.

From Nikiti, the main administrative Centre of the area N. Marmaras, Tristinika, Toroni, Porto Koufo, and Kalamitsi to Sykia, Sarti, Vourvourou, Ormos Panagias, Agios Nikolaos and Agios Theodoros – almost all the local beaches have been awarded Blue Flags.

Authentic natural beauty, a traditional adherence to the calm pace of Mediterranean life, with a modern tourist infrastructure bringing with it the genuine qualities of hospitality and fine taste of the local people as well a direct connection to the lasting innocence of Greek nature and civilization – these are the qualities which make Sithonia unique.

Sithonia, where the sea has lovingly created a landscape of rocky and sandy beaches, where truth, myth, and history come together to create the most beautiful of all the paintings in the great gallery of Greek landscapes.

Central Halkidiki

Halkidiki is so much more than the three promontories that most people usually associate it with. The center of the famous “three-legged” peninsula is dominated by Mount Holomontas, which is a vast expanse of oaks, madrones, pines and fir trees that draws all sorts of nature lovers, from hikers to families enjoying a bicycle ride and just taking in the fresh air.

This is also the site of the University Forest of Taxiarchis, a 5,800-hectare state-owned forest managed by the Forestry Commission in cooperation with the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, home to amazing flora and fauna. Prevalent in this forest are broad-leaved trees, such as oaks at lower altitudes and beeches higher up, and different varieties of pine, along with an abundance of Erica shrubs that feed the area’s bee population. Reaching 811m at its highest peak, the forest is home in its remoter parts to wolves, foxes, wild boar, and predatory birds – it is a magnet for bird-watchers – and has a museum where visitors can learn all about the local plants and animals.
